Ameobi backs Martins

Shola Ameobi has backed Newcastle strike partner Obafemi Martins to come good.

Shola Ameobi has backed Newcastle strike partner Obafemi Martins to come good.

The pair played together for the first time in last weekend's disappointing defeat to Fulham.

Martins has yet to find the net since his move from Internazionale, but Ameobi is confident that the new strike partnership can score goals together.

"It was the first game that I have played with him and it takes time for anyone to gel," said Ameobi. "But we have to do that sooner rather than later.

"That should be the case because a lot depends on the chances that we create and I know we can both score goals.

"He has done that all his career and I want to keep on my scoring run."

Meanwhile, Ameobi has admitted he is still struggling with his nagging hip problem.

Ameobi has been unable to train with the injury and he is doubtful for Thursday's Uefa Cup tie with Levadia Tallinn.

"It's day to day with that," added Ameobi. "I'm not training because it's a bit stiff.

"I am talking with the medical staff about trying to get it sorted."
