Alan Shearer would like to see Glenn Roeder remain in charge of Newcastle, even though he does not have the necessary qualification.
A string of poor results led to Graeme Souness' departure earlier this year, with Roeder stepping in on a temporary basis.
The former West Ham boss turned The Magpies' fortunes around, first steering them away from the threat of relegation and then guiding them to a top seven finish.
The club are keen to keep Roeder, but unfortunately he does not possess the Uefa Pro License required to take on the position full time.
The Premier League have rejected Newcastle's initial request to install Roeder as their manager, but Shearer has added his considerable weight to the argument.
"I hope he gets it because he deserves it," the newly retired Shearer told Sky Sports News.
"When he took over in February, if everyone was honest, we were looking at the other end of the table rather than the end of the table we've ended up.
"That's a great credit to Glenn and the rest of the players."
Newcastle's strong finish secured their place in the Intertoto Cup, giving them an opportunity to qualify for the Uefa Cup, and Shearer feels that the club can go from strength to strength under Roeder.
"He's worked so hard to get the club into Europe and he obviously wants a shot at it now and rightly so.
"He's got the bug, got that winning feeling and he wants a go at it."
Meanwhile, Newcastle's Stephen Carr has appealed against his dismissal in the game against Chelsea.
Carr was given a straight red card for a relatively innocuous challenge on Lassana Diarra, and The Magpies are hopeful that The FA will look on the incident with leniency when they review it.
