Bent content at Town

Darren Bent has explained his reasons behind rejecting a move to Newcastle.

Darren Bent has spoken of his contentment with his situation at Ipswich Town, and has explained his reasons behind rejecting a move to Newcastle.

Bent has been one of the star performers in the Championship after netting 14 goals this season, and has been consistently linked with a move to the Premiership.

The 20-year-old had the chance to make the step up in March 2003 in a double deal with Darren Ambrose, although Bent turned down the North East giants to gain more experience with The Blues.

Newcastle have a wealth of experience up front whilst, under Joe Royle at Ipswich, Bent has matured into a dynamic striker, and for this reason the youngster believes that retrospectively his decision will be seen as the correct one.

"You look at the strikers Newcastle have got," Bent told the Guardian.

"Obviously they have one of the all-time greats up there in Alan Shearer, they've got [Craig] Bellamy who's a good player, and Shola [Ameobi], and now they've got Patrick Kluivert.

"So I was thinking to myself, why go up there and play a bit here and there when I can be here, learning my trade week in, week out and getting the experience I need? It was definitely the right decision.

"A lot of people said to me, 'You should have gone - it was a massive opportunity.' But I think in the long run people will look back and say I've done the right thing."

With the striker spearheading Ipswich's charge to first place in the league, Bent could well find himself in the top flight next season where he surely belongs.
