Full-back feels Villa move will increase international chances

Nicky Shorey is hoping his move to Aston Villa will boost his prospects of a return to the England squad. The full-back completed a £4million switch to Villa from Reading earlier this week to ensure he is playing Premier League football this season. Though Shorey's immediate priority is to earn a place in the Villa team, he is also determined to break into Fabio Capello's plans. Shorey has won two England caps to date and believes he is at the right club to catch the eye of coach Capello.

English base

"Obviously once you play for England you want to keep on playing for England," Shorey told the Birmingham Mail. "I've had a taste of it and I really enjoyed it. "It would be good to get back there, but the first thing on my mind is trying to get into the Aston Villa team. I'll take it one step at a time. "I think it's important for any club to have an English base and there are some quality English players and there are lots of good young English players here at Villa, so I'm sure I am in the right place to be noticed by Fabio Capello. "Just coming to a club like this and playing with the players that are here, hopefully that will bring the best out of me."
