The 26-year-old has made four appearances for The Blades since his loan switch from Villa Park, but his future is still unclear.
Boulding has said that he wants to prove himself to Graham Taylor, but being a Blades fan may well now want to sign a permanent deal with Neil Warnock's Division One high-flyers.
Warnock brought Boulding on as a 60th minute substitute during the 2-1 victory over Stoke City at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night, and is mulling over a move for the striker.
The South Yorkshire side are well stocked in the striking department, with Carl Asaba returning to fitness with a hat-trick against Brighton at the weekend.
Warnock however, now has his sights firmly set on a push for promotion, and strength in depth is the only way he will achieve his ambition.
Boulding's future in The Steel City will now be decided after Saturday's visit of Wimbledon, with the club stating: "His contract finishes at the weekend, and the club will assess Michael's situation then."
Meanwhile, The Blades will have to do without the services of defender Robert Ullathorne for six weeks as he undergoes a double hernia operation.
The 31-year-old has been in good form so far this term but has been forced to go under the knife due to the problem.
"Rob has had the symptons for a few weeks and says the problem is more uncomfortable than painful," said Warnock.
"But it is preventing him from sprinting fully and we feel this is now the best course of action."
