Tottenham appear to have missed out on their second targeted striker Anthony Martial because he has signed a new contract at Monaco.

Sky Sports reported earlier this month that Spurs had begun talks with Monaco to sign the 19-year-old - an exciting prospect with France's U21s.

Sky sources understand a meeting was held between Monaco and Martial's representatives as recently as Thursday in which a possible deal to White Hart Lane was discussed.

But the French Ligue 1 club once again reiterated their determination to keep the player and a one-year extension to his previous deal, extending to 2019, was agreed instead.

Spurs have a strong interest in Martial after they missed out on their first-choice striker target Danny Ings, who opted to join Liverpool. The attraction with Martial is his versatility; able to play anywhere across the front line.

He made 44 appearances last season for Monaco and scored 10 goals, and he has played games and scored goals at every level of France's international setup from U16 to U21.

Martial joined Monaco on a three-year deal from Lyon in 2013 for a fee of €5m and he has made 55 appearances overall for the club, who finished third in the French top flight.

Tottenham's list of targets is lengthy and there are a number of other strikers that interest them, such as Stuttgart youngster Timo Werner, Sevilla's Carlos Bacca, Aston Villa's Christian Benteke and QPR hitman Charlie Austin.

Sky sources also understand Spurs have ended any interest in Barcelona defender Marc Bartra.
