QPR remain keen to sign David Beckham, but Loftus Road chairman Tony Fernandes has admitted any prospective deal is a long way off.
The former England captain is coming to the end of his contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy and a number of clubs are monitoring his situation.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is an admirer of the 36-year-old global icon, who trained with the White Hart Lane side in January, but a loan switch could not be agreed.
And ambitious new Rs owner Fernandes has confirmed that the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder is in his thoughts, but that any audacious swoop is still some distance away.
Fernandes told
Sky Sports News: "Let's see. It's early days. It is something that I think that would be good for the club.
"But we're a long, long way from anything."
Barton
Fernandes' arrival in August gave manager Neil Warnock a late boost in the transfer window, with deals for the likes of Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Anton Ferdinand completed.
The former Newcastle midfielder is poised to make his debut against his old club on Monday night, and the Rs supremo believes he is an excellent acquisition.
He said: "I think we need someone like him in the midfield. I think Joey has a lot to prove. He has got tremendous energy, tremendous drive, and I think someone like Neil can get the best out of him as well."
Fernandes admitted QPR tried and failed to land Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, who eventually joined Sunderland on a season-long loan, but played down talk of interest in Peter Crouch, who left Spurs for Stoke.
He admitted: "We did have a go at Nicklas Bendtner, but it didn't work out. Time ran out against us. Peter Crouch, not so much, there was a little bit of talk."
And Warnock can expect to receive further backing in the January transfer window if the club's Premier League campaign is not going to plan.
Fernandes added: "This is a long-term project and we've got to do what we've got to do to survive and to grow this club. If need be, we will be there in January."
