Gardner's bad break

Anthony Gardner will require surgery on the broken nose he sustained at Bolton, just after he had returned from injury.

The imposing defender has struggled all season with injuries that have limited his appearance for Tottenham.

Martin Jol has added a number of players to his squad in January, including Nottingham Forest stopper Michael Dawson, meaning competition for places is red hot.

Gardner was hoping for a run in the side after starting the game at Bolton, only to suffer a broken nose after a collision with team-mate Stephen Kelly.

Now sporting two blacks eyes, Gardner requires surgery and is frustrated at the timing of his latest injury.

"It was an unfortunate collision but these things happen," Gardner told the club's website.

"The only thing is that it was a bad time for me because I'd just got back in the team.

"The most frustrating thing is that I was playing and you need to make the most of your chances at the moment.

"There is a lot of pressure, a lot of competition and you want to be playing all the time.

"Hopefully it won't be too long before I'm back out there."
