Spurs deny Gomes interest

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR have denied having any interest in Portuguese international Nuno Gomes.

The Fiorentina striker has been linked with a move to Spurs and Birmingham, but the North London club have refuted claims that they were ready to sign the 26-year-old.

Spurs' director of football David Pleat told his club's official website that there was not truth in the reports that Gomes was on his way to White Hart Lane.

Pleat did, however, reveal that Spurs turned down the chance to sign Middlesbrough's new record signing Massimo Maccarone.

Pleat claims that the Italian international wanted a move to London, in preference to the North East.

"Maccarone was offered to most of the London clubs because that is really where he wanted to go," said Pleat.

"However, he was not a player that Glenn Hoddle wanted to pursue."
