LOWE: SAINTS ARE BIGGER THAN SPURS

SOUTHAMPTON chairman Rupert Lowe has added spice to Sunday's clash with Tottenham Hotspur by claiming that The Saints are the bigger of the two clubs.

Glenn Hoddle left the South coast outfit six months ago to take over at old club Spurs, to the anger of the Southampton hierarchy and supporters, but Lowe insists that the former England coach has taken a step down.

"We have a new stadium that is comparable with that of Tottenham's. We can fill it and we have great supporters. We finished two places above them last season. Who's the bigger club?" added Lowe.

There has been a certain amount of bad blood between the two sides due to the controversial departure of Hoddle and Spurs' £4 million bid for Dean Richards, but the Saints chairman insists it is all water under the bridge and has even accepted an invitation to lunch with the Spurs board before Sunday's encounter.

"We don't have a vendetta and I have no difficulty having lunch with them because all this has been about business rather than anything personal.

"I haven't spoken to Glenn since he left but if I see him I will shake him by the hand because I worked with him for 15 months without a cross word," declared Lowe.

Meanwhile, Southampton striker James Beattie is aiming to put one over on his former mentor and fire The Saints up the Premiership table.

"There is no bitterness towards Glenn, but the fact remains he left us in the lurch," said the 23-year-old.

"I feel I have a score to settle and there would be no better place to do it than in his own back yard.

"I can think of no better place to get our first win. It is just as what we need to get our season going. Just as important, our supporters would appreciate it - and we all know why."
