Pompey boss eager to tie down striker on new deal

Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill has revealed he has stepped in to discussions with Nwankwo Kanu in a bid to tie up a new deal for the striker. The 34-year-old Nigerian is currently out of contract after his previous terms at Fratton Park expired at the end of last season. Cotterill has made no secret of his eagerness to extend Kanu's stay on the South Coast, although talks have been slow amid uncertainty over the club's future. "I felt that I had to intervene, really. One minute the administrator is talking to his agent," Cotterill said in The News. "Is King getting the full monty of the conversation? I don't know. "So what was needed was for me to sit down with him, have a chat and go from there. He wants to stay. "I'm not asking him about his options. If I do that it makes me look insecure, and I don't want to do that. "He's a good man. It's all about us and us wanting him. It's good with him. I've gauged it good. "But we have a contract dispute with King which is awkward. It's time for him to think where am I and what am I doing?"
