Pompey midfielder will not give up without a fight.

Portsmouth midfielder Richard Hughes has urged his team-mates not to give up hope of Premier League survival as the crisis club prepare to face Sunderland on Tuesday. Pompey suffered a 5-0 humiliation against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, but have a run of games which will see them meet Stoke and Burnley after the Black Cats clash, and Hughes believes his side can still escape the drop. Hughes told the Portsmouth News: "There is hope. It would be ridiculous to say otherwise. "We would have looked at the United game and thought 'anything we get out of this is a bonus'. We knew we had some tough fixtures."

Hope

Avram Grant's side have only won four league games this season and currently sit seven points adrift of safety, but Hughes is confident Pompey can salvage the situation with their upcoming fixtures against teams from the bottom half of the table. He added: "The fixtures are there for us to turn things around and the gap is there and it has to be bridged. "We have some games coming up which we would look at as more winnable. "Some tough matches are out of the way now. They are matches we can win and put ourselves back in the running."
