Vargas primed for Catania

Catania are set to sign Juan Vargas, who rejected a move to Portsmouth.

Catania are set to sign Juan Vargas, who rejected a move to Portsmouth earlier this month.

The Peru international appeared primed for a switch to The Premiership after Pompey agreed a £1.6 million fee with his Argentine club Colon.

But Vargas was unable to settle on personal terms with Harry Redknapp's side and has subsequently been trying to find another European side.

Serie A new boys Catania appear to have put together a suitable package for the left back, who trained with the club last week.

He has undergone a medical with Catania and is expected to be unveiled as their player in the coming days.

Vargas' agent Carlos Delgado said: "We can say the negotiations with Catania have been positively concluded."

Meanwhile, Catania have also been linked with a loan bid for Internazionale attacker Alvaro Recoba, who also interests Atalanta and Torino.
