Hunt close to Reading deal

Reading expect Stephen Hunt to become the next player to sign a new contract.

Reading expect Stephen Hunt to become the next player to sign a new contract later this week.

Ivar Ingimarsson, Shane Long and James Harper are among the Reading players to have agreed new terms of late, while Leroy Lita and Nicky Shorey are also in line for a reward.

Republic of Ireland international Hunt is being given improved terms, just six months after agreeing a new two-and-a-half year contract.

The midfielder had asked for a fresh deal and director of football Nicky Hammond admits the issue should be resolved in the coming days.

"We've just about agreed it with Stephen," Hammond told the Times. "He's happy and we'll hopefully put it to bed before the end of the week.

"With us, it's all about the players delivering and the club recognising that and rewarding them accordingly."

Hammond also provided an update on the contract talks with striker Lita and full-back Shorey.

"We're in the early stages, and that's for no other reason than trying to do things right," he added to the club's official website.

"We spoke to both players at the end of last season in terms of extending the contracts.

"I'm confident discussions will move forward. They're both happy, and happy players generally make for good players."
