The Australian has been Marcus Hahnemann's understudy this season, but has stepped out of his team-mate's shadow in the FA Cup.
He has enjoyed his appearances in the Reading first team, but his current deal expires in the summer.
Federici confirmed discussions regarding an extension are on the agenda and is keen to come to an agreement with the Premiership high-flyers.
"My contract is up at the end of the season, but talks are planned and I am loving it at Reading at the moment," said Federici.
Having featured in the previous two rounds of the FA Cup, Federici is expected to start Saturday's fifth round tie at Manchester United.
With Steve Coppell set to stick to his policy of fielding his back-up players in the cup, Federici is relishing the trip to Old Trafford.
He told the club's official website: "I can't wait. It doesn't get much bigger than Old Trafford, so I'm really looking forward to it. It's the most famous club in the world.
"I don't think I'll be nervous, I'll just be eager to play really.
"We've been there before this season and that helps a lot. I was on the bench just wanting to play, you can tell it's a special place.
"I'm very positive about getting a result. It'll be an interesting challenge, and I like being the underdog. We've got a good chance and there's nothing to lose."
