Royals boss Alan Pardew is interested in obtaining the tough-tackling midfielder, who has fallen out of favour at Tynecastle, and is keen to return south.
The 30-year-old Jamaican international played for Swindon, Manchester City, Bristol City and Portsmouth before switching to Edinburgh.
Pardew is looking for reinforcements following an injury to defender Matt Robinson.
The full back faces a couple of months on the sidelines after X-rays confirmed he cracked a rib during the entertaining 4-3 defeat to Millwall at the weekend.
