A consortium based in Thailand is holding talks about a £40m takeover of Bolton Wanderers after being approached by the Championship strugglers.

BEC-Tero, an entertainment conglomerate which runs television stations, concerts and sports events in Southeast Asia, has joined forces with sports media giant Siam Sport Syndicate to make the bid, according to The Nation newspaper.

Bolton enjoyed an 11-year stay in the Premier League from 2001-12, even qualifying for Europe in 2005, but they find themselves 22nd out of 24 teams in the Championship table.

BEC director Bryan Marcar said the club remains an attractive proposition, despite their lowly position.

He told the daily newspaper in Thailand: "I must admit I have a close relationship with the club's president.

“The club has plenty of property, and most importantly, they have their own stadium, hotel and football academy.

"In terms of their financial status, they made profits between 2004 and 2006 but suffered losses since then, with their debt now standing at £150m. However, the club is willing to address this situation.

"They're quite ready in almost every aspect. That will help us benefit in many ways, especially when it comes to Thai players playing in England."

Marcar said he and Siam Sport executives, Pongsak Pholanan and Wiluck Lohtong, would travel to England to hold further talks with Bolton officials.
