Kevin Davies says new Bolton boss Neil Lennon has plenty of work to do at the Macron Stadium

Neil Lennon has started work at Bolton after being confirmed as the club's new manager.

Wanderers announced on Sunday evening that they had appointed the former Celtic boss as Dougie Freedman's successor.

Freedman was sacked after a poor start to the season that has left the club bottom of the Sky Bet Championship.

It's a big challenge to guide Bolton away from the relegation zone and he'll have to do it largely with the squad he's inherited from Dougie Freedman.

Lennon will attempt to start the recovery process when he takes his first training session this morning, flanked by Johan Mjallby and Gary Parker, who were both part of his backroom team at Celtic Park.

Stability

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ from outside the club's training ground, reporter James Cooper said: "Neil Lennon is Bolton's fifth manager in seven-and-a-half years and they're now hoping for a period of stability.

"We know all about Lennon's record with Celtic but this is a very different challenge - not much money to spend and not much leeway in terms of acquisitions, though the squad, he believes, is good enough to do a job.

"Steve Clarke, Chris Hughton and Tony Mowbray were among those who looked at this job but Bolton have plumped for Lennon. The big question mark, despite his pedigree north of border, is that he's got no managerial experience in England.

Neil Lennon has taken the backroom staff he had at Celtic - Johan Mjallby and Gary Parker - with him to the Macron Stadium.

Lennon, who has signed a three-year deal, will hold his first press conference as Bolton boss on Monday afternoon, with Saturday's trip to Birmingham his first match in charge.

The Irishman quit Celtic in May after guiding the Hoops to a third successive title win.

He also won the Scottish Cup twice and led the Glasgow club to the last 16 of the Champions League.
