Speed leaps to Jussi's defence

Gary Speed has backed Jussi Jaaskelainen after his poor performance at the weekend.

Gary Speed has backed goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen to bounce back following his poor showing against Newcastle United at the weekend.

The Bolton goalkeeper was to blame for Newcastle's first two goals in a 3-1 defeat at St James' Park.

However, Speed claims that Jaaskelainen owes the club nothing after some outstanding displays in the weeks before.

"He hasn't let anybody down," the former Wales captain told the club's official website.

"Jussi will be disappointed because he is a perfectionist but you can count on one hand the number of mistakes he has made this season.

"He's kept us in games. If it wasn't for Jussi in the last two or three weeks we would have got beaten in some of those matches.

"He owes us nothing. He's been fantastic all season. Everybody makes mistakes but when goalkeepers make them it is costly. That's the nature of being a goalkeeper."

Meanwhile, Jay Jay Okocha and Bruno N'Gotty are both doubtful for Bolton's next game with West Ham after picking up knocks in the game with Newcastle.

Okocha was forced off early in the first half with a thigh injury and N'Gotty did not return after half time because of an ankle problem.
