Everton have confirmed they have launched an appeal against the red card shown to Tim Cahill in Sunday's 3-1 win over Newcastle United.
The 32-year-old saw red for his part in an ugly confrontation in which he grabbed Magpies midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who was also cautioned, by the throat at the full-time whistle.
Steven Pienaar, Nikica Jelavic and Johnny Heitinga seemed to have put the match beyond any doubt before Tony Hibbert hit an own goal to give Newcastle fans a glimmer of hope midway through the second half.
With the win secured, though, there was altercation at the final whistle which resulted in a minor shoving match between players from both sides and saw referee Andre Marriner reaching for his cards.
It was Cahill's first red of the season and he faces the prospect of being banned for the first three matches of next season if the appeal is unsuccessful.
Cabaye has since apologised for his part in the incident, remarking: "It is out of character and for that I am sorry."
