Arsenal defender welcomes the news of defender's new contract

Thomas Vermaelen could hardly contain his excitement at news that fellow defender Laurent Koscielny has decided to extend his stay at Arsenal. The two 26-year-olds formed a solid partnership in the second half of last season which helped the North London club finish the campaign strongly. Koscielny moved to Arsenal from Lorient in 2010 and has since established himself as a key member of Arsene Wenger's side. His performances last season earned him a place in the France squad for Euro 2012 and now he has been rewarded with a new long-term deal at the club. And Vermaelen, who signed a contract extension of his own last year, is looking forward to linking up with his defensive partner for years to come. "I heard the news that Laurent extended his contract and I'm really happy," he said. "From the start when he came to Arsenal he has shown he is a great player and he is developing really well. I think he has done everything for the club already and I hope he will stay a few more years. "Of course he is not here at the moment because he is not fit - he had a holiday because he played in the Euros. But he is a great player and I'm happy that he signed for the club."
