Wilshere frustration for Gunners

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted his disappointment at Jack Wilshere's injury setback.

But Gunners boss will not risk midfielder's long-term future

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted his frustration at Jack Wilshere's injury setback, but will not rush the England international at the risk of his long-term future. The midfielder has not played this season after last summer sustaining an initial ankle problem, which required surgery. Wilshere was on target for a February comeback date, but on Wednesday it was confirmed he has suffered a stress fracture to his right foot. Arsenal issued a statement to insist the 20-year-old star's campaign had not been ended by the new injury and, although disappointed, Wenger insists there is no hurry for full fitness. "I always said February, [so] it is frustrating, but then again you have to respect human nature," said the Gunners boss ahead of Saturday's match against Blackburn Rovers. "What is most important is that for such a young player you have to respect his future." It remains unclear when Wilshere will again be available and he is later in February set for further scans. Arsenal also have concerns over Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of the lunchtime kick-off against Blackburn and the teenager will be assessed over a knee problem.
