Wenger wants Clichy patience

By Patrick Haond
Arsene Wenger has praised young defender Gael Clichy following the Frenchman's breakthrough into the first team at Arsenal.

The Gunners boss is delighted with Clichy's form as stand-in for the suspended Ashley Cole.

With a tough fixture at Southampton on the horizon, Wenger admits all that is required for his young, emerging players is patience.

"When Giovanni van Bronckhorst left for Barcelona, I knew I lost the substitute for Cole but I knew too that I had a talented 18-year-old player," Wenger told L'Equipe.

"For a long time, we didn't have a lot of quality with our young players.

"Today we have quality and, now, it is only a matter of patience."
