Bastia play down Gunners link

EXCLUSIVE
ARSENAL are believed to be keeping tabs on Bastia's Nicolas Penneteau, but the French club have denied any contact with Arsene Wenger's side.

The Gunners are constantly being linked with new keepers because groin strain victim David Seaman is in the twilight of his career.

Rami Shaaban has been deputising for the injured England international, and will do so again in the crunch clash against Manchester United on Saturday, while Stuart Taylor is also hopeful of becoming Seaman's heir apparent.

However, Wenger's network of spies are compiling reports on a number of different keepers across the globe and, inevitably, the Frenchman has also paid some attention to his homeland.

Penneteau, 21, has also attracted interest from Lens, but is rumoured to have been watched by Arsenal representatives during the 1-0 defeat to Sedan.

The Marseille-born ace is the regular number one for the Corsican outfit, and is known to have many admirers within the game.

However, a Bastia spokeswoman told planetfootball.com that there had been no contact from Arsenal.

"We haven't heard of anything," she stated. "There has been no contact.

"At this stage, he is in the team and is happy."

Paris Saint Germain tabled a £5 million bid for the youngster back in August 2000, after he made the breakthrough with Bastia.
