Reds close on Argentine swoop

Liverpool appear to have won the race for the much sought after Gabriel Paletta.

Liverpool appear to have won the race for the much sought after Banfield defender Gabriel Paletta.

Despite considerable interest from Argentine clubs - most notably River Plate - it is The Reds who are believed to have agreed a fee of ‚é¼3 million (£2 million) with Banfield.

Paletta could now join up with his new team-mates in June after Rafa Benitez's side gave the green light for Paletta to see out the rest of the Argentine season with his current employers.

Paletta is expected to undergo a medical at Anfield next Saturday but the player urged caution amid claims that the transfer was already signed and sealed.

"I want to wait until I get to England and see how everything is because I know that my personal contract hasn't been agreed yet," said Paletta.

"The only thing I know is that Liverpool have allowed me to play for Banfield until the [Torneo] Clausura ends."
