Reds target out until New Year

Benfica star Simao Sabrosa will not play again until the New Year due to his knee injury.

Benfica star Simao Sabrosa will not play again until the New Year due to his knee injury.

The complaint forced the Portugal international to sit out Benfica's memorable 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Wednesday night.

Club doctors now believe he is unlikely to play again until the league match against Pacos de Ferreira on January 8.

News of his extended lay-off is likely to jeopardise a possible move to Liverpool who were close to agreeing a deal for the former Barcelona star in the summer.

The Reds have already admitted they have continued to track the 26-year-old with a view to another move in January.

However, Benfica's surprise passage to the final 16 of the UEFA Champions League might well have led them to dismiss the notion of breaking up their squad mid-season anyway.
