Stefan Klos's clanger in the Old Firm defeat to Celtic is reported to have increased Gers boss Dick Advocaat's desire to bring in a new keeper to Ibrox.
The former Borussia Dortmund star's refusal to sign a new deal has also meant that Advocaat has had to keep his options open as Klos could leave when his contract expires in 2003.
The Gers are willing to cash in on him rather than risk losing him for nothing and current number two Jesper Christiansen is to be made available.
The young Danish shot-stopper has failed to convince whenever he has been called upon and he is not viewed as a long-term custodian.
Langfield, who is now a member of the full Scotland squad, has been highly recommended to Advocaat by Gers goalkeeping coach Billy Thompson.
Advocaat is set to keep tabs on the highly-rated keeper and make a move for the player at the end of the season.
Meanwhile, Gers supremo David Murray has denied reports linking the club with a move for out-of-favour Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld.
Westerveld had admitted he would be interested in a possible switch to Ibrox, but Murray dismissed the speculation.
"There is nothing at all in that suggestion," said Murray. "We have not expressed any interest in Sander and it's not right to say we have."
