The former Tottenham player came through a medical at Anfield on Tuesday and Liverpool boss Gerrard Houllier is now hoping to use the player in the club's pre-season friendly with Stoke City on Saturday.
Barmby will now have to brave his former team-mates and their passionate supporters when the two Merseyside rivals meet at Anfield on October 28 and then at Goodison Park on April 16 next year.
Liverpool have confirmed that Barmby will wear the number 20 shirt next season, with fellow new signing Gary McAllister taking number 21, Bernard Diomede taking 24, Pegguy Arphexad being given 19 and Markus Babbel lining up in number 6.
