New Chelsea defender accepts he will be under the microscope

New Chelsea defender Gary Cahill knows his performances will be under even greater scrutiny following his move to Stamford Bridge from Bolton. The England centre-back completed his protracted switch to the West London club for a reported fee of £7million at the beginning of the week. He was left out of the squad for Saturday's disappointing 0-0 draw with Norwich as manager Andre Villas-Boas is keen for him to spend more time in training with his new team-mates. Blues defenders David Luiz and Jose Bosingwa have come under fire from the pundits at times this season, and Cahill understands that his recent switch will heighten the interest in his performances. But the former Aston Villa player insists he is ready for whatever the critics throw at him, and he is used to battling to prove his worth.

New challenge

He told The People: "I'll be under the microscope more now, especially when I make mistakes. "I saw what was said on Match of the Day and people are entitled to their opinion. I don't have a problem with that. "Sometimes though if people don't watch you every week they just see results and it affects their opinion. "If people do criticise me here I won't take it to heart, that's for sure. All that will happen if people doubt me now is that I will prove them wrong. "I've never had anything easy. Even when I have been with England's younger age groups I was a third or fourth-choice selection. "I'm ready for everything that comes with this new challenge."
