Redknapp fancies Huth

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has admitted an interest in Robert Huth.

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has admitted an interest in Robert Huth, after conceding he is unsure if Blackburn Rovers will sell Ryan Nelsen.

Redknapp is determined to strengthen his defence before the start of the season and is keen on England international Sol Campbell.

But a deal for Campbell is not straightforward and Redknapp already has a list of centre half alternatives.

Earlier this week, Pompey enquired about Blackburn's Nelsen, but their £4 million bid received short shrift.

The New Zealand stopper remains a target for the ambitious South Coast club, but Chelsea's Huth is also a possibility.

Huth's proposed move to Middlesbrough collapsed after the German failed a medical, but he could be handed a lifeline by Portsmouth.

Redknapp acknowledged his admiration for the 21-year-old and also confirmed he has not given up his pursuit of Nelsen.

"I'm not sure what's happening with Huth now his move to Middlesbrough has fallen through, but I like him," said Redknapp.

"He's a big, strong lad to have at the back.

"We have enquired about Nelsen. He's another one I like, but I don't know if Blackburn are willing to sell him.

"I would be surprised if we got Sol Campbell now. I don't know what he wants to do with his life."
