Ajax coach claims defender is close to matching United's players

Reported Premier League target Jan Vertonghen is almost on a level with Manchester United's players, according to Ajax boss Frank de Boer. Vertonghen is out of contract in Amsterdam next summer and has previously been linked with a number of English clubs, including United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. The Belgium international went up against the Red Devils in the UEFA Europa League last 32 on Thursday night, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side securing a 2-0 first-leg victory. Spurs scouts were reportedly in attendance of that clash to fuel reports the 24-year-old, a youth product at Ajax, could make a Premier League move. Godenzonen coach De Boer claims Vertonghen is close to matching United's players in ability but feels there is room for improvement.

Close

He told De Telegraaf: "Jan is already close to the level of Manchester United and he can still improve. "Especially as he moves forward through the midfield, he is so dangerous. He sometimes does that too little in my eyes. That's a shame, because then his qualities are more conspicuous." Vertonghen was one of Ajax's better performers against United and the defender was pleased with his individual display, particularly in the opening half, which ended goalless. "The first half was especially nice," said the Belgian. "Yes, that felt good. Especially since we were playing against an English opponent."
