Red Devils boss calms contract fears and offers injury updates

Sir Alex Ferguson has played down concerns regarding contract negotiations with Danny Welbeck and has offered an update on his injured stars. Reports have emerged suggesting that Manchester United's attempts to thrash out a contract extension with Welbeck have hit a snag. It was claimed that talks have broken down, leaving the England international facing up to an uncertain future at Old Trafford. Ferguson, though, insists that is not the case, with the Red Devils confident that a compromise will be reached. "There is no issue," he said. "We know the situation well with Danny. There is nothing to worry about there." Meanwhile, ahead of Sunday's crunch clash with Arsenal at Emirates Stadium, Ferguson has revealed that long-term absentees Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley have stepped up their rehabilitation.

Fitness

He said: "They are doing a good running programme at the moment and their fitness levels are good." On Cleverley, he added: "I am hopeful in 10 days' time, he will be playing football on the training side of it. "That is the plan anyway, unless there is any recurrence. We can kick on and then it depends how he does in training. "His fitness levels should be fine and if that is correct, he could cope right away. You are talking about a week." While Young and Cleverley remain out of contention for now, Ferguson claims defensive duo Phil Jones and Chris Smalling will be available for the trip to Arsenal after recovering from the after-effects of a collision during United's FA Cup derby clash with Manchester City. "Phil and Chris will be fit," he said.
