United tactician knows past glory counts for nothing this term

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United's Premier League dominance counts for nothing in this season's title race. The Red Devils have been the team to beat since 1992 having been crowned English champions on no less than 12 occasions. Rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have finished top three times apiece over the past two decades, while Liverpool last won the title in 1990. United are playing second fiddle to Manchester City this season and Ferguson knows what has gone on before does little to aid this season's battle. Ferguson and his team recently got one over Roberto Mancini's squad after knocking them out of the FA Cup in a thrilling 3-2 success that saw Vincent Kompany dismissed early on. The Scottish tactician wants his troops to perform week-in, week-out in order to maintain the pressure on City, who are attempting to win a first Premier League crown.

History

"I frequently stress the importance of our history and experience, but you cannot depend on past achievements to win trophies," commented Ferguson. "It's important we get our fingers out and perform in every game. "Nice though the cup is, we are now back to the nitty gritty of the league. No excuses now. We have got some of our injured players back and others are not far from returning. "It will make a difference as we strive to put City under the kind of pressure in the league that we put them under in the cup."
