Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney can embark on a goalscoring spurt following his brace against Wolves.

Boss pleased with reaction from United squad

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Wayne Rooney can embark on a goalscoring spurt following his brace against Wolves. Rooney was instrumental in the 4-1 win and brought an end to a drought having failed to score in his previous eight games. Ferguson is aware the 26-year-old tends to score in bursts and hopes for more of the same having seen his side overcome a seven-game sequence of scoring only once. "Sometimes strikers do score in spurts, and hopefully that's Wayne off now on one those really good spurts of his," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "He scored nine in the early part of the season. Now we are going up to an important part of the season, if we get the goal ratio again, it puts us in good fettle." The United boss also singled out Rio Ferdinand for particular praise, as the 33-year-old put in a commanding performance at centre-half.

'Fantastic'

"He was fantastic again," added Ferguson. "I though he played his best game of the season on Wednesday [against Basel]. "He's in fantastic form and he's using his experience with the young ones around him which is really good." With United leading 2-0 at the break, Steven Fletcher dragged Wolves back into the game within two minutes of the restart. The hope lasted just nine minutes, however, as Nani restored the two-goal cushion, and Ferguson believes it is in the club genes to react as they did. He added: "That's the character of the football club, it's in the history. But the important thing is that they've got a great desire. "We probably got a little break here and there today, but we worked hard and really played some good football. "We will take a lot of stick from critics and even from people we thought were perhaps on our side. This was the right response."
