Michael Owen took part in training on Monday morning ahead of Manchester United's UEFA Champions League tie with Valencia.
The experienced striker has been sidelined since October after picking up a hamstring injury, but is closing in on a return to action.
Prior to Saturday's game against Blackpool being postponed, Sir Alex Ferguson suggested Owen was a fortnight away from a first-team comeback.
The Sunday 19th December showdown with Chelsea appeared a likely target for Owen's return, but the 30-year-old could be involved from the bench against Valencia on Tuesday night.
He featured in the open session of training ahead of the Old Trafford fixture and veteran defender Gary Neville was also involved.
Midfielder Paul Scholes and defender Patrice Evra trained separately and were watched by Ferguson as they went through their paces.
Central defender Jonny Evans was absent, although there was no immediate indication as to the Northern Ireland defender's problem.
United are already assured of their place in the last 16 and know a point will be enough to seal top spot in Group C.
