Lupoli pips Rossi to prize

Arsenal striker Arturo Lupoli has pipped Giuseppe Rossi to a Carling award.

Arsenal striker Arturo Lupoli has pipped Manchester United youngster Giuseppe Rossi to the Carling Cup New Talent award for 2005/2006.

The former Parma starlets were well clear of the rest of the six-man short-list for the prize, which rewards those who have showcased their talents in the Carling Cup.

Although Rossi's side have made it through to Sunday's final in Cardiff against Wigan Athletic, Lupoli scooped the award after some fine displays for The Gunners, including an impressive performance against Reading.

Rossi's finest first team performance came in the FA Cup, when he helped destroy non-league Burton Albion, and he seems unlikely to be allowed a chance to shine in the final at the weekend.

The other players on the short-list were Steven Davis (Aston Villa), Charles N'Zogbia (Newcastle), Jerome Thomas (Charlton) and Ben Watson (Crystal Palace).

Last year's award went to Watford defender Jay DeMerit.
