Higginbotham up for fight

Danny Higginbotham insists Southampton are ready to beat Manchester United.

Danny Higginbotham insists Southampton are up to the challenge of retaining their Premiership status at the weekend.

The Saints must beat Manchester United at St Mary's on Sunday and hope Norwich and Crystal Palace fail to win to stave off relegation.

Higginbotham maintained their hopes with a last-minute equaliser at Palace last weekend and is confident Saints can put his former employers to the sword.

"People over the last month or so have questioned the players' character and attitude but there is no problem with our attitude and character," he told Sky Sports News.

"We're fully committed to the cause. It means everything to the players and it's very important to us.

"It's obviously a massive game playing Manchester United, who are a very good team, but we have got to treat it like any other week. - we won't go and do anything extra special.

"It's an important last game and we have got to make sure we're sharp in training and ready for Sunday.

"A lot of people I was there with have moved on. It was a long time ago now since I left United, five or six years ago.

"It's always great to play a team like them but we have got to concentrate on what we can do and have got to get the result on Sunday.

"Normally people would say we would be happy with a draw against the top teams, but we know we have got to get a win and hope results go our way elsewhere in the country."
