Wayne Rooney will miss Manchester United's clash with Arsenal

Louis van Gaal has confirmed that Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw will both miss Manchester United’s Premier League match against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United captain Rooney was forced off at half-time during last Saturday's 2-1 win at Crystal Palace with a dead leg and Luke Shaw took a blow to the face in the same game.

Van Gaal had better news about Robin van Persie, who has been declared fit to face his former club after the striker missed the palace game with a virus.

Argentine duo Angel Di Maria and Marcos Rojo have also been passed fit to face the Gunners in the Super Sunday clash.

During his weekly interview with MUTV, Van Gaal said when asked about Shaw and Rooney: "The situation is not positive for us, they cannot play, neither of them.

"Yes, it is a short-term thing, we have only one match to play [after Arsenal], so I think it will be difficult for them to play again this season."

Pressed further on United's other injured players, he added: "Angel Di Maria and Robin van Persie are able to play. Rojo has trained this week with us and he could play."
