Eredivisie side keen to keep Toon target

PSV coach Fred Rutten is desperate for Erik Pieters to remain at the club this summer despite speculation linking him with Newcastle. Toon goalkeeper Tim Krul confirmed earlier this week that the Premier League side are chasing his Dutch compatriot's signature. Newcastle are expected to step up their pursuit of the Netherlands international as they look to replace star man Jose Enrique, who is set to depart St James' Park for Liverpool after agreeing a deal. Pieters and PSV team-mate Wilfred Bouma, who has also been linked with a move away from Eindhoven, were both dropped to the bench for Sunday's 3-1 defeat at AZ Alkmaar. But coach Rutten still says he wants both players to stay.

Resolved

"I've talked with Bouma and can say it's a storm in a teacup," Rutten told Dutch newspaper AD. "It's resolved. I made one thing clear - he cannot leave. The same is true for Pieters." He added: "(The speculation is) always the same, just before August 31st. It is restless, then on September 1st everything is quiet again." Responding to alleged interest in 23-year-old Pieters, Rutten said: "No clubs have reported. "Of all those possible transfers in the newspapers, in reality only very few go through."
