West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray has revealed he plans to extend defender Shelton Martis' stay at the club.
Mowbray signed the Dutchman from Darlington while in charge of Hibernian and then paid just £50,000 to take him to the Hawthorns in the summer of 2007.
The 26-year-old's current contract is due to expire in the summer but, after making an impression during the latter stages of this season, Mowbray intends to take up a 12-month option to prolong his stay.
Mowbray told the
Birmingham Mail: "It's nothing that needs to be done urgently but as far as I am concerned there is no decision to make other than saying we will pick up Shelton's year option.
"He is a young footballer in terms of experience and the signs are there that that penny is dropping and that he understands the maturity required to play for our team.
"And he has all the attributes and assets you require to play in central defence.

"He looks composed with the ball, he is big and strong and fast and those things have never been a problem."
Meanwhile, Mowbray has admitted he fears that midfielder James Morrison's season could be over as he looks to overcome a foot injury.
He said: "Best-case scenario is he feels fine and has a chance for the weekend. Worst-case scenario is he isn't and it could be weeks and weeks. He's been on antibiotics and they have basically done the job.
"It was as bad a blister as you've seen, with skin going over skin, over skin. It became infected and the antibiotics have cleaned the infection up.
"But let's wait and see - we might need to go in and scrape some of the dead skin away."
