Black Cats keeper needs games in order to earn new deal

Sunderland goalkeeper Darren Ward has admitted he would welcome the opportunity to go out on loan. The experienced shot-stopper is set to be out of contract in the summer, but remains hopeful of securing a new deal at the Stadium of Light. However, he realises that in order to earn a new contract he must first prove his worth, and accepts that he is unlikely to get that opportunity on Wearside. With Craig Gordon and Marton Fulop currently ahead of him in the Black Cats' pecking order, Ward feels he may have to seek a new challenge elsewhere in an effort to catch Ricky Sbragia's eye. "A loan deal might be an option for - who knows," the 34-year-old told the Chronicle. "There's always that opportunity.

Injuries

"There are always other clubs who suffer injuries or suspensions and they might come knocking. "We are getting to an important stage of the season whether for promotion, relegation or the play-offs. "It would certainly help from my point of view if there was a chance to go out on loan. "I haven't really pursued it just yet because I have only just got back fit, but if something came up then I'd certainly consider it. "I'm out of contract in the summer and that's why it's vitally important that I get games to try and stay in the shake-up here."
