Fernando Torres has offered his view that Steven Gerrard is a better player than Frank Lampard.

Reds hit-man favours team-mate over Chelsea star

Fernando Torres has stoked the fire ahead of Liverpool's clash with Chelsea on Sunday by declaring Steven Gerrard to be a better player than Frank Lampard. The England midfield duo, so often stars for their clubs and underperformers in unison for their country, go head to head at Anfield in a game that can be seen live on Sky Sports 1. While the stakes could not be higher as both clubs bid to close on league leaders Manchester United, Reds striker Fernando Torres believes Gerrard's influence could edge the contest in Liverpool's favour. The relationship between Torres and Gerrard looks to border on the telepathic at times and the Spaniard, who has scored 39 goals since moving to Merseyside in July 2007, has nothing but praise for his colleague.

Idol

"Frank Lampard is a great footballer too, of course. He has many aspects of his game that are similar to Gerrard. But if you ask me which player I would rather have at Liverpool I will definitely say Stevie," Torres told the News of the World. "He is a key player for me at Liverpool. He is truly incredible. He has a great connection with the fans and is such a big part of the club. "For me, Gerrard is an idol. I liked him even before I came to Anfield and it is amazing to play at his side. He is on my list of the best midfielders in the world, no doubt. "He has a great shot, great control, he arrives in the penalty box at the right time and he has great vision on the pitch. At times for us he is almost another striker. A midfielder who scores and sets up goals like he does is something special."
