Peruvian emerges as possible target for Bruce

Wigan Athletic are weighing up a bid for Hamburg's Jose Paolo Guerrero, according to reports. Latics boss Steve Bruce is eager to add fresh striking options to his squad in the close-season and is thought to be closing on the signature of Egyptian hit-man Amr Zaki. It has been suggested Bruce's right-hand man Eric Black was in Germany on Wednesday evening to check on Guerrero's form and fitness in Hamburg's Bundesliga clash against Werder Bremen. It is thought Guerrero, brought to Hamburg from Bayern Munich, could be available for a fee in the region of £6million.

Out of form

While Bruce is eager to bring in a proven goalscorer, Guerrero concedes he has not been at his best of late. "I can't be confident about my performances this season," he lamented. "I am one of many players in the team and if things aren't going so well at the club then I have to criticise my own performance. "We aren't first or second - if we were then I'd be contented. However, little by little I am managing to play better consistently."
