Maldini slams own fans

Paolo Maldini has launched an attack on the Milan faithful.

Paolo Maldini has launched an attack on the Milan faithful. Both Dida and Alberto Gilardino were singled out by home fans during the 2-1 win over Benfica, whilst the general support was lacking any sort of atmosphere. Maldini, who led his side to UEFA Champions League glory last term, is less than amused.

Anger

"I'm very angry, as are my team-mates," Maldini said in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport. "After all that we've given, done and won, we deserve to be treated differently. "This attitude started at last season's derby and with some help from the fans we would have won that game. "Fans all over the ground aren't giving their support and I think that they need to show us that they have Milan in their hearts. "It seems like we're playing away all the time and we don't want to put up with that any longer." It is believed Milan's hard-core 'ultra' fans are behind some of the below-par support - because they were not guaranteed tickets for last season's Champions League final in Athens. "There are economic reasons for it and power struggles," Maldini said. "But if these are the reasons to go to the stadium, I don't know what to think anymore."
