Black Cats fail in Baines move

Wigan claim Leighton Baines has turned down a move to Sunderland.

Wigan claim Leighton Baines has turned down a move to Sunderland.

Baines held talks with Sunderland officials last weekend after Wigan gave the Premier League new boys permission to talk to the England Under 21 international.

Wigan, who have included Baines in their side for Wednesday's pre-season friendly at Blackpool, claim the full-back will not be moving to the Stadium of Light.

Everton are believed to be weighing up a move for Baines and Latics boss Chris Hutchings has praised the player's attitude despite all the speculation over his future.

"Leighton is a first-class pro and a first-class person and despite all the speculation and rumour surrounding his future, he has remained professional throughout and as ever is a joy to work with," Hutchings told the club's official website.

"I have coached him since he first broke into the first team as a young apprentice and taken great satisfaction in how he has developed as a player and an individual."
