Garry Monk in talks with Swansea over new contract

Swansea City boss Garry Monk has revealed preliminary talks are under way over a new deal at the Liberty Stadium.

Monk has been in charge of the Premier League club since early 2014, and they are likely to finish his first full season in charge in the top eight, while still holding a chance of a place in the Europa League with two games remaining.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's home game with Manchester City, Monk said: "I've began those contract talks with the chairman and the club and I'm looking for the future to be with Swansea.

"I'm looking to progress this club for the next season.

"We have opened discussions - we have said we will sit down and go into detail in the near future.

"Whether that's in the next few days or weeks I am not sure because we're in a busy period at the moment.

"My agent will sit down with the club, but it's just about trying to get the right time to meet and discuss it.

"It's like any contract, an agreement has to be reached. But I am very focused on Swansea City, that's very clear and you all know that. I have no plans to change anything.

"I've been here for 11 years (as player and manager) and doing this job really makes you appreciate that you're doing it for the fans. Hopefully in the long term I can achieve what I want to here.

"We're pushing for Europe now – it’s a real possibility – and that's a fantastic achievement where I'm at in my career now and for the players and the club itself.

"If we can achieve that it would be another stepping stone for the club."
