Napoli have insisted they want Rafael Benitez to remain as manager despite the Spaniard rejecting a three-year contract extension.

The Italian club said talks will take place at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Benitez, whose family still live in Liverpool, has been linked with the jobs at Manchester City, Newcastle United and West Ham.

He has previously said he would like to return to the UK having managed the Reds from 2004 till 2010.

Napoli lie sixth in Serie A and were knocked out in the semi-final of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday by Lazio.

And former Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce believes the former Valencia manager wants a return to the Premier League.

He told Sky Sports News HQ: “I think he'd love to come back. I think he's really enjoyed his time here and he's got a connection with Liverpool.

“When I was working with the FA and spent a day with him, he really opened his books for me - probably more so than any other manager.

“He showed me everything at Liverpool like the scouting.”
