UEFA has fined Celtic almost £10,000 over the behaviour of their players and fans during last month's Europa League tie against Inter Milan.

The Hoops were ordered to pay £5,850 after collecting five or more cautions during the 1-0 defeat to the Italians at the San Siro stadium.

Defender Virgil van Dijk was sent off in the first half for two bookable offences while Craig Gordon, Adam Matthews, Emilio Izaguirre, Nir Bitton and Kris Commons were shown yellow cards.

And Celtic were hit with a further £3,650 punishment after travelling supporters set off flares during the last-32 fixture, which saw the Scottish champions crash out after a 4-3 aggregate defeat.

It was the seventh time the governing body's control and disciplinary committee had hit the club in the pocket in just over three years for incidents involving their fans in European competition.

Celtic were fined £7,300 following crowd disturbances at a Europa League match with Dinamo Zagreb last year.

An "illicit banner" displayed at a UEFA Champions League qualifier with KR Reykjavik in 2014 drew a £16,000 fine from the governing body and they were also handed a £42,000 fine in 2013 for another "illicit banner" at a Champions League match with Milan in 2013.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell criticised the "small minority" of supporters who were "damaging the reputation" of the club after the penalty.

'Fireworks'

Earlier in 2013, the club were fined £4,000 for setting off of fireworks at a Champions League qualifier with Cliftonville.

Celtic's fans also caused them to be fined twice during their Europa League campaign in the 2011/12 season.

In March 2012, UEFA fined Celtic £21,000 after supporters displayed an offensive banner and set off flares during an away game with Udinese.

Celtic were also fined £13,000 for "illicit chanting" in the same competition during a match with Rennes in 2011.

In a statement, Celtic said: "Clearly Celtic Football Club is disappointed by today's decisions. It should be noted that Celtic players have an excellent disciplinary record in European football over many years and in Scotland, Celtic
has been top of the League's disciplinary table for the last three years, something which we are rightly proud of.

"Again, it is disappointing that the actions of one or two individuals within a support of well over 3,000, have let the club down by using flares at this match.

"Inter Milan and the local Italian authorities applauded our fans for their excellent conduct and positive support. Once again, however, the actions of these individuals have done nothing but damage the club they claim to support.

"Our fans have earned a wonderful reputation for their magnificent support of the club and we will not allow the safety of our fans, or their great reputation to be compromised by actions of this tiny minority."
