Liverpool's under 21s have beaten their Chelsea counterparts 2-0 to move up to fifth in the table.

Chelsea looked to make a fast start with Izzy Brown finding space for the first shot of the evening, but the ball flew over Lawrence Vigouroux’s crossbar.

In what was an open game Sergi Canos posed Liverpool's first threat but he fired his shot inches past Jamal Blackman’s post, while Lamisha Musonda tested Vigouroux at the other end.

However, it was Liverpool who struck first after Fikayo Tomori was adjudged to have brought down Sinclair in the penalty area in the eighth minute and Wilson stepped up to smash the penalty home and give the Reds the perfect start.

Michael Beale’s side were starting to dominate proceedings with chances falling for both Wilson and Canos to extend the lead but Blackman was not troubled by either effort.

After the break Chelsea came flying out of the traps once more with Jordan Houghton winning the ball in midfield before releasing Brown, but the forward was well blocked.

The Blues were getting into excellent positions but failing to find the right pass in the final third and they were made to pay as Sinclair danced his way down the left, before firing into the far corner from a tight angle to double his side’s lead.

Chelsea threw on Tammy Abraham and Alex Kiwomya as Chelsea looked to find a way back into the game and they did have chances with the former poking wide after excellent work from Musonda.

The midfielder was in the thick of the action minutes later as he latched onto Dominic Solanke’s cross in the centre of the penalty area but he got his header all wrong as Liverpool held on for all three points.

The victory means Liverpool move above Merseyside rivals Everton into fifth, just one point behind Chelsea and three behind leaders Manchester United.
