A Gonzalo Higuain double allowed Napoli to regain third spot in Serie A after a 2-1 win at home to Genoa.

However, the victory was not without its fair share of controversy as the Argentinian's opening goal could have been ruled out for offside, while he earned the Azzurri all three points from the penalty spot after an infringement which was hard to spot.

Iago Falque brought Genoa level midway through the second half but it was Rafael Benitez's men who celebrated three important points which took them back above both Sampdoria and Lazio into third, where they are just six points behind second-placed Roma.

Elsewhere in Serie A on Monday, Udinese picked up their first win in six attempts despite ending their 2-1 win over Empoli with 10 men.

Antonio Di Natale put Andrea Stramaccioni's men in front after just 19 minutes, but Riccardo Saponara levelled from the spot with his first goal of the season for Empoli.

Silvan Widmer earned Udinese all three points with what appeared to be a cross before Panagiotis Kone was given his marching orders, but the visitors held on for a vital victory.

Next up for Udinese, who climbed above the two Milanese teams into eighth place in the table, are league leaders Juventus, Napoli and Lazio, while Empoli, who remain just a point above the relegation zone, travel to Roma as their search for a first win since November continues.
